Tips, Notes and Special remark
  1. There are a lot to see in Sigiriya than frescos. I was not able to visit at ramparts, water gardens and herbal gardens.
  2. Photographs are not allowed at frescos.
  3. If you carefully see, there are drawings among graffiti on mirror wall.
  4. Ticket counters of Sigiriya are opened at 7am and closed at 5pm. Local ticket counter is situated at local car park. One adult ticket is Rs 50 and valid for museum as well.
  5. Early morning or late evening are the ideal time to get on to Sigiriya rock. It would be difficult to stay on there with afternoon heat.
  6. There are direct buses from Dambulla to Sigiriya.
  7. During our visit at Sigiriya, we had breakfast and lunch from Hela Bojun Hala. It is one of a cheap and reliable place to have food. But their spread is vegetarian. It opens from 6.30am-5pm. Hela Bojun Hala (හෙල බොජුන් හල) is situated at the turn of Kimbissa road.
  8. Better carry at least 500ml water bottle with you. There is a tank at Lion’s paw.
  9. It is not necessary to have a guide.
  10. Avoid visiting Sigiriya and Pidurangala in public holidays as it would be crowded.
  11. Don’t get panic in Bambara attacks. Cover the exposed part of the body and minimize your body size by crouching down.
  12. There are elephants at the forest behind Ramakele. Be careful. We have encountered some.
  13. Behave accordingly at Pidurangala. No tickets need at Pidurangala.

  • Unseen Sigiriya

Sigiriya is known as a majestic creature of King Kasyapa I (478-496AD). But Sigiriya has much more complex history than this. Now archeologists believe a series of developments occurred at Sigiriya extending from 2nd or 3rd century BC to 12th or 13th century AD. Sigiriya has become a Buddhist monastery and a tourist destination following King Kasyapa’s demise. This amazing place was rediscovered by British in 19th century. Prof. Senarath Paranawithana was sacrificed a much time of his work in excavation of Sigiriya.

How to getting there
Sigiriya has two separate vehicle parks for locals and foreigners. Local car park is situated at T.B. Tennakoon MW. There is about 1.5km walk along the shaded path to reach Western entrance of Sigiriya where all enter this place. Foreign parking premises has less distance to western entrance.

These two chaps participated in this journey: Heshan (left) and Rakitha (right)

Sigiriya is surrounded by three ramparts (පවුරු) (outer, middle and inner) and two moats (දිය අගල්) (outer and inner). Water gardens are situated on your way to western entrance, on either side of the pathways. (I couldn’t give attention for these items, kept for next visit)
